Who qualifies

  • You must be 18 to 64, approved for the Disability Tax Credit, and have filed your tax return for the previous year.
  • You must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes.
  • If you have a spouse or partner, they must also file a tax return.

How to apply

  1. 1

Make sure you have the DTC

The Canada Disability Benefit requires an approved Disability Tax Credit. If you do not have it yet, apply for the DTC first.

  2. 2

    File your tax return

You and your spouse or partner (if you have one) must file a tax return each year so your income can be checked.

  3. 3

    Apply for the CDB

Apply online, by phone, by mail, or in person through Service Canada.

Good to know

  • A working-income exemption ($10,000 single / $14,000 couple) means some earnings do not reduce your payment.
  • The maximum rose to $204.20/month in July 2026. The payment is reduced as income rises above the threshold.
